Swim Good

It has been a very long time since I have posted here, and I do hope that this sporadic posting doesn't become a habit.

Fashion and blogging have been demoted to back-seat priorities as I am preparing for finals week during the first semester of my new school year. I am thrilled, however, to be working as Creative Director on the board of IDENTITIES, my school's premier fashion show. We had our first photoshoot today for promotional materials, and it was my first time on a fashion photoshoot set. It was thrilling. I could have never imagined the amount of creative thought goes into every aspect of fashion photography- setting, makeup, hair, models, clothing, accessories, angles, theme, lighting, and poses. I can't wait to apply all I've learned to future photoshoots, and our fall show.

Otherwise, the semester has flashed by in a blur. I have been struggling with some internal questions about the value of learning and higher education, my future goals and career path, the implications of my personal moral code, the meaning, purpose, and impact of philanthropy, and the value of relationships.

This is quite a lot, and I have my most intense, but most fulfilling course this semester- an introduction to philosophy, to thank for this new, introspective attitude. Reading Rousseau, Smith, and Marx has really challenged me to critically question all that I know to be true about realities of the world, and how we should act according to those realities. My lack of activity on my other blog, the meré, can also be attributed to all of this introspection.

To conclude my 'update' post, I have exciting news! I have officially declared my major- Social Studies (an interdisciplinary study in the social sciences), with a focus field of Economic Development and Women's Empowerment in South Asia. This is the first time I've been genuinely excited about my studies, and I can't wait to jump in.

Happy Holidays, all! If you are (like me) struggling through finals, papers, and projects, watch this video. I promise it will be encouraging.

With love,
- J

london style

It's been so long since I've last written (almost two months?!), and so much has happened since I last updated this blog. Ryan Lochte, camels, and star-gazing are all a part of the equation, but as I unwind from the summer in my new dorm room, I realize I need to catalogue all that's happened.

My updates will come in little snippets, and I decided that while it's fresh in my mind, I wanted to start with London style.

It has been my dream since I was younger to visit London. Oxford was my dream university, and I religiously scrolled through hundreds of pictures of the beautiful city as if it were a sacred ritual. Finally, the chance came this summer while I was in China. Naturally, I seized it with arms wide open!

I always figured Londonites had it going on when it came to fashion-- Victoria Beckham, Asos, and Topshop are (fashion) household names. The city did not disappoint. Even the hoards of crowds and tourists (including me) from the Olympics couldn't cramp London's style this summer, and here are just a few of the favorite pieces, looks, and people I saw during my trip:

Everything is perfect about this-- the hair, the textured knit, and the adorable polka-dotted leggings.
The patchwork on his pockets, the little cardigan, and the neon sole make him even more adorable.
Faded denim on ombré denim. Is that even legal?
My friend and her flag. Yes, this was deemed appropriate clothing during the Olympics
Incredible spacey metallic pants with a pop of color and a neutral shoe
 Prints.

I wish I had my camera around more to capture the amazing style of the city. Outrageous, scandalous, and classy all at the same time-- I think that would be a good description of London style. Next up: food. I know you'll be looking forward to it (as I most definitely will!).

I hope you are all enjoying the ends of your summers. Go outside, relax, lay out, and get that tan while you can. I'll be enjoying the last few days before classes begin.

Till next time,
- J

Ni hao

Greetings from China!

I'm currently in my bunk bed (in an amazing hostel in Beijing), chomping away at dark chocolate, writing to you all for a quick update.

I started a little e-mail list with my friends and family to keep them updated for the next two months on my trip here, but Jinah had the great idea to share with you all little tidbits from what I like to call, ever so dramatically, THE CHINALOGUES. Here we go.

My first two days here have been absolutely amazing. The first day, my roommate and I explored our local town, made some friends in the little markets, bought ridiculous Chinese candy (quail eggs, mutant tiny sweet potatoes), ate 'milk bags', wandered around Lama Temple, and ordered (successfully!) at the best dumpling restaurant around. My favorite part so far was the street market in the area. I ate scorpion on a stick.. will upload pictures later! There were all sorts of disgusting eats like sparrows, flying squirrel, centipedes, sea horses, starfish, and other bugs that I couldn't even identify.

I love the energy of the alleyways here called 'hu tong's -- bikes and motor-bikes speed by so fast, and there are always people just sitting outside, having beers, and playing with their adorable/fearless kids and dogs. They are incredibly hard to navigate, though, and I'm waiting for the day I get lost in the maze. Addresses don't exist here, apparently. Or they do, but no one uses them.

Nothing makes sense here, but somehow, all of it-- the food, people, fashion, nightlife, language-- comes together to create an amazing, curious, dynamic city. I can't wait to let you guys in on more.

Let me know what y'all are up to this summer- travelling? working? studying? I'd love to know! Until then, here are some instagrams from my trip so far-

current lust

It doesn't faze me that BHLDN is a wedding shop. After all, some of life's best memories are made at weddings, right? I think we should be able to bring that magic to our everyday life, starting with the rings (not wedding bands) I posted about back in February. The next step comes with these gorgeous blue satin slingback heels -- pun most definitely intended.

Sold out in my size, so I can't even be tempted by them. Check these beauties out here (get 'em in black or white too!) and if the shoe fits... well, you know what to do. I'm still eyeing the slingbacks, this bracelet, these adorable, quirky pencils, and this silk romper.

Lusting too much in the dead of summer,

Dots, leopard, and leather

Nothing says Celine like beautiful cuts, bold pops of color, unexpected but cohesive patterns and textures, and sheer, feminine glory. My brother and I spent last weekend on the couch scrolling through Resort collections, and agreed that the Celine Resort 2013 collection is just too good to be true. The printed scarves, see-through footwear, and long jackets set against the grungy white background = resort perfection.

I would do unspeakable things for one of those jackets.
